A young Christopher Eubanks fan didn’t get to see the American score what would have been the biggest upset thus far at 2024 Roland Garros, but he left Court Suzanne-Lenglen came away with a remarkable souvenir from the man himself after his 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Jannik Sinner.

Christopher Eubanks shook off a tough season to put on a valiant effort against the No. 2 seed, who is aiming to become the first man in history to win his first two majors at back-to-back Grand Slam tournaments, but ultimately bowed out in straight sets.

Still, the former world No. 29 accepted defeat with his inimitable grace, making time for a young fan who had been watching him under the Lenglen roof for just over two hours.

With the clay-court season officially behind him, Eubanks will move on to grass, where he enjoyed his best results in 2023: winning his first ATP title in Mallorca and stunning Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

As for Sinner, the Italian won over plenty of fans himself after scoring an eighth straight Grand Slam victory of the season, having started the year with his maiden major victory at the Australian Open.

Despite missing his home tournament at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia due to a right hip injury earlier this month, the 22-year-old looked healthy enough to withstand the pressures that come with the best-of-five format, winning just under 80% of points on his first serve and striking 33 winners to just 24 unforced errors.

Sinner, who has a chance to end Roland Garros as the new world No. 1, will face a crowd even hungrier for an upset in his second round when he takes on French favorite Richard Gasquet on Wednesday.
