NEW YORK—Iga Swiatek was already set for an incredible night when she found out she’d be playing mixed doubles alongside childhood idol Rafael Nadal at the Tennis Plays for Peace exhibition.

“He's my favorite player,” she said of Rafa in 2020. “He was the only player I watched when I was younger.”

But the world No. 1 made it one she’ll never forget after the two combined to play one of the best points ever.

Taking on Coco Gauff and John McEnroe in mixed doubles, the reigning Roland Garros champion made an audacious approach, striking the ball between her legs to join Nadal at net. Not to be outdone, Nadal pulled off a ‘tweener of his own in response to an excellent lob from Gauff.

It may be hard to even remember what happened next, but in case you forgot: Swiatek and Nadal ultimately won the point as Swiatek nailed an inside-in forehand pass to punctuate the fantastic point.

The night continued to provide memorable moments in a men’s doubles match featuring Carlos Alcaraz and Frances Tiafoe against Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul. Nabbing one of the US Open’s comically large racquets, Paul makes quite an iconic attempt at net.

The USTA mounted Tennis Plays for Peace in support of Ukraine, which has been under attack from Russian and Belarusian troops for over six months, and raised $1.2 million for GlobalGiving’s Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund, which, per their press release, “supports humanitarian assistance in impacted communities in Ukraine and surrounding regions where Ukrainian refugees have fled.”

Tennis Plays for Peace also featured Ukrainian stars Dayana Yastremska, Katarina Zavatska and Daria Snigur along with former players Sergiy Stakhovsky and Olga Savchuk.
