Serena Williams appeared on The Drew Barrymore show this week, opening up about the final weeks of her illustrious tennis career with the actress-turned-talk show host.
Williams, who played what will likely be her final match at the 2022 US Open, spoke about the importance of having daughter Olympia in the stands in Flushing Meadows.
“I was afraid I’d get distracted,” Williams said of seeing her daughter in the crowd. “She came to a match once and I was like, ‘Oh my god, is she wearing sun cream?’ It’s nuts, so I would get stressed out and think, ‘Wait a minute, I gotta serve!’”
An inspiration to the 23-time Grand Slam champion since her birth in 2017, Olympia provided some much-needed advice to her mom after a difficult defeat at the Western & Southern Open earlier this summer.
“’It’s ok, Mama,’” Serena said, quoting Olympia. “’You just have to do what you feel.’ I literally wanted to cry. It was the sweetest thing ever and I was just so proud of her.”
Williams also discussed meeting Olympia’s dad Alexis, whom she also married in 2017, at a restaurant near her hotel in Italy.
“This guy shows up and the whole place is empty,” Williams recalls. “This guy’s really tall, comes with his computer and just plops down right next to us, and opens his computer to start typing. I was just thinking, ‘Why?’ I was so angry! So, we tried to get rid of him.”
As you can guess, her ploy didn’t ultimately work out, but check out the full interview for the story.
