DOHA—Elina Svitolina is missing an important, and famous, part of her team this week at the Qatar Total Open. That's because her boyfriend Gael Monfils is in Rotterdam pursuing his own ranking points and prize money.

Svitolina is the No. 4 seed this week in a draw that's seen a few late withdrawals but still has major threats in it, including Simona Halep, Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova. Svitolina, a 13-time WTA champion, has big expectations for herself in every tournament she enters.

"Any tournament that I play, I always try to win it, to give everything what I have and to fight for every match, every point," Svitolina said. "Of course there is expectations when you are high seed that you'll play well, that you'll go far in the tournament, but I'm sure that everyone has that, and it's just a part of being high seed."

In her corner, though not literally this week, is Monfils.

The couple went public during the Australian Open with a joint Instagram account. Then the world No. 33-ranked Frenchman stuck around to watch his girlfriend reach the quarterfinals. She ventured out to Sofia last week to see him make the semifinals.

Now they've parted ways, temporarily. Svitolina has been dealing with a neck and shoulder injury, but decided to accept a wildcard into Doha.

"I didn't plan to come here. I thought I'd have some more rest," she said. "But I was ready, I think, a little bit earlier. I always remember coming here with good memories, so it was a decision last minute."

Monfils won his first round in Rotterdam over David Goffin, while Svitolina starts on Wednesday against Jelena Ostapenko.
