MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.—After making his way to the fourth round of the Miami Open, Roger Federer made his way to the Tennis Channel set. There, he spoke with Chanda Rubin and Brett Haber quite casually about his highly-anticipated return to clay.

"You should do it if you feel like the clay excites you," he said his team suggested. While Federer's general attitude is simply, "Let’s see what happens."

The Swiss hasn't played on European clay since 2016, when he played just two matches in Rome. He hasn't appeared in Paris for Roland Garros since 2015.

Despite his humble expectations, fans are ravenous to see the 37-year-old again, and he's scheduled to make good on his word in Madrid. He has won nine titles on clay, including Roland Garros 10 years ago.
