In Lovik they trust. Alexander "Sascha" Zverev knows how to dole out thanks. In what Tennis Channel broadcaster Brett Haber termed "a very comprehensive" winner's speech in Washington, D.C., Zverev the Younger saluted not just his mother, his father, his team and his brother. He also took time to address his family's beloved dog, Lovik.
"Thanks for taking care of him, walking him during my matches in the heat that we've been in here," Zverev said to his mother after winning his fourth title of the 2017 season, besting Kevin Anderson in the Citi Open final. "He can't sit through two-hour matches, so he's a very important part of all of our lives. You take very great care of him after you took care of us for so many years, me and my brother. You taught us this game from an early age, and I think it's quite amazing. And you have a lot to do with this, what I'm doing on court right now."
That certainly a wide-ranging segment of the 20-year-old's victory speech and yet, no, he wasn't quite done: "And yes, I haven't forgotten my dad, obviously." Zverev knows precisely who has brought him to this point, and he's grateful.
Just don't expect him to create a Twitter account for little Lovik anytime soon.
