After a drama-filled and contentious three hours and 11 minutes on Court No. 1, tennis fans around the world were holding their breath for one thing: the post-match handshake between Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Their blockbuster third-round match had no shortage of drama, with Kyrgios recovering from a one-set deficit to oust the No. 4 seed, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7).

But the tennis itself was almost secondary, as the match was marked by multiple outbursts: At one point, Tsitsipas hit a ball into the stands, narrowly missing a fan, and Kyrgios demanded the umpire Damien Dumusois default him. When that didn’t happen, the Aussie ranted at Dumusois and called him a “disgrace”.

When Tsitsipas pegged Kyrgios at the net, the Aussie again looked to the umpire to penalize his opponent. Because it’s not an illegal play, the umpire again didn’t take action—triggering another wave of Kyrgios’ anger. Tsitsipas himself had a go at the umpire too, telling Dumusois that Kyrgios had “zero respect for the game, zero respect for his opponent.”

With all of this brewing in the background, fans were expecting a continuation of the drama when Kyrgios and Tsitsipas met at the net. But to everyone’s extreme disappointment, the world feed made a stunning choice to not show their handshake and pan away to Kyrgios’ support team instead:

For the record, the handshake itself was probably the least dramatic part of the match—an understated, drive-by acknowledgement to Kyrgios from a Tsitsipas who was simply eager to get off the court.
