WNBA star Cameron Brink takes inspiration from Coco Gauff with pre-game outfit

As the tennis action is heating up at Roland Garros, its fashion had its moment in the WNBA this week, as rookie star forward Cameron Brink admitted to taking inspiration from US Open champion Coco Gauff for one of her pre-game outfits.

"I'm wearing my little New Balance tennis set, I want to be like Coco," Brink confessed in the league's Wednesday "'fit check" video posted to social media. Ahead of her team's game with the Caitlin Clark-led Indiana Fever, Brink paired the set with a pair of New Balance sneakers and "old-school socks."

Both Brink, who was selected No. 2 by the Los Angeles Sparks out of Stanford University in this year's WNBA draft, and currently leads the league as a rookie in blocks per game, and Gauff are sponsored by the Boston-based sportswear giant. The two recently starred together in the latest ad spot for New Balance's "We Got Now" campaign, which debuted in April shortly after the WNBA draft.

Brink's pregame 'fit adds to the rising lore of off-court "tenniscore" fashion, which is having its turn in the pop culture spotlight as a result of the March release of the Hollywood blockbuster, "Challengers," and its star Zendaya's head-turning promotional looks.

But if you ask the sport's style icons, the practice, which takes the preppy, athletic aesthetic typically associated with on-court fashion and puts it out into the world (and on social media), was at the cutting edge long before it was blowing up TikTok.

"Tennis never goes out of style—it’s always trending!" Venus Williams said earlier this year. "I’ve always loved seeing people embracing tennis-core and incorporating it into every day style in their own unique way. Tennis has long been at the intersection of sports and fashion."

Gauff has been wearing a grey set by New Balance in her first two matches at Roland Garros, and she's through to the third round for the fourth year in a row.

Her collared polo tank and pleated skirt have been paired with a new, grey colorway of her signature CG1 shoe, as a part of New Balance’s annual celebration of its heritage color.
