Wrapping up Wawrinka's 2017 season

Swiss star Stan Wawrinka announced that he will not play the remainder of 2017 as he recovers from impending knee surgery. There were plenty of supportive comments for the defending U.S. Open champion.

It will mark the first time since 2013 that Wawrinka will not win a major title, and his 26-11 record showed that 2017 was a year of ups and downs.

Wawrinka’s early season high was a semifinal run in the Australian Open where he pushed Roger Federer to five sets. It brings to mind a comical moment earlier in the tournament when a spectator shouted to Wawrinka, “Go Roger!”. Wawrinka immediately replied, “He’s not here. Go to Rod Laver (court).”

At Indian Wells, Wawrinka fought against Federer in the final, but lost two tough sets. Even so, he entertained with his trademark blistering backhand.

The clay-court season was another journey of lows and highs. Wawrinka only posted two total wins at Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome, but he won the Geneva tune-up for the French Open. He found his rhythm and overpowered Andy Murray in the French Open semifinals. It would be the highlight of his year and his last win.

Two days later, he was victimized by Rafael Nadal’s dominant performance and 10th French Open title. He faltered on his two grass court matches at Queen’s Club and Wimbledon, and suddenly he’s done before the U.S. Open series has gathered momentum.

Wawrinka is ranked No. 4 but will not be able to defend 2630 points. He is projected to fall near the border of the top 10 before he makes his return in 2018.
