Maria Sakkari is breaking barriers for Greek tennis. What started with two Grand Slam semifinal appearances in 2021, at Roland Garros and the US Open, grew into a career high ranking of world No. 3.

In September, she overcame her title-winning hurdle and walked away with her first WTA 1000 title in Guadalajara.

“I’m speechless,” Sakkari said afterwards. “It’s been four and half years since I won my first title, and I just finally won my second one. All these thoughts I’ve been having all this time were very tough to overcome, and I’m just very proud of myself that I did it this week.”

Sakkari's big win was long overdue. She's taken out Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka, and even the great Serena Williams before.

There’s a lot more Sakkari coming to shake up the tennis world. And if she has her way, she’ll be setting many more records for Greek tennis—and maybe even win a Grand Slam title—in the years to come.
