The roof of Brown University's indoor tennis center in Rhode Island collapsed after midnight on Wednesday under heavy snow. No one was hurt.
On Thursday, the university's crews worked to fix the roof of the Pizzitola Memorial Sports Center. It was reported that in January 2011, the roof also collapsed after almost 25 years of service. “There was much more snow on the roof in 2011 than there is now,” said Stephen Maiorisi, vice president for facilities management, to brownbears.com.
“There was extensive water damage then from the sprinkler system, reaching down to the basketball floor at ground level. This time, the facilities staff was able to shut off the water, lay down tarps, and prevent further damage."
The tennis facility will return to service as soon as possible, but is being closed as a precautionary measure. With heavy snow persisting, major repairs will get underway in the spring.
