10 incredible things Iga Swiatek achieved by winning the US Open

From extending her winning streak against Top 10 players to the first Roland Garros-US Open double in almost a decade and staying perfect in Grand Slam finals, Iga Swiatek achieved a lot with her triumph in Flushing Meadows this year.

Here are just 10 of the things the 21-year-old world No. 1 did:

She won her third Grand Slam title—and her first on hard courts. Her hard-court prowess has been obvious for a long time—she made the semifinals of the Australian Open this year, then won three straight WTA 1000s on the surface at Doha, Indian Wells and Miami—but she’s now added a hard-court major to her two previous Grand Slam titles, both of which came on the clay of Roland Garros, in 2020 and 2022.

She’s now won her last 10 matches in a row—and 20 of her last 21 sets—against Top 10 players. She beat three players in the elite in the last three rounds in Flushing—Jessica Pegula, Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur. Her last loss to a Top 10 player came against then-No. 1 Ashleigh Barty in Adelaide this year.

She’s now won her last 10 finals, all in straight sets. Since falling to Polona Hercog in her very first WTA final as a 17-year-old in Lugano, Switzerland in 2019, she’s undefeated when there’s a title on the line. Some foreshadowing: she also went 7-0 in ITF Circuit finals before transitioning to WTA events in 2019.

She's now won seven WTA titles this year, the most since Serena won seven in 2014. The last player to win more than seven in a year was Serena, too—she won 11 in 2013.

She now has more WTA ranking points than anyone since Serena in 2015. With 10,365 ranking points on her total after her victory in the Big Apple, Swiatek currently has the most WTA ranking points since Serena had 11,285 the week of October 19th, 2015.

She’s now 3-0 in Grand Slam finals, just the seventh woman in the Open Era to win their first three in a row. And she’s only the second woman in the Open Era to win their first three Grand Slam finals in straight sets, after Lindsay Davenport.

She’s the first woman to win Roland Garros and the US Open in the same year since Serena in 2013. She’s just the 10th woman in the Open Era to achieve that.

She’s the first Polish player, woman OR man, ever to win the US Open. She was already the first Polish woman in the Open Era even to reach the quarterfinals in Flushing Meadows—former world No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska reached the fourth round five times in 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2016, but never further.

She’s now 57-7 this year, the most wins in a season on the women’s tour since Barty finished the 2019 season with a 57-13 record. Only one other woman has even cracked the 40-win milestone so far this year—Jabeur, with 44.
