The Italian finds himself in a tough section of the draw helmed by projected seeds Gabriel Diallo (No. 30) and Tommy Paul (No. 13). Countryman Lorenzo Musetti (No. 6 seed) and Wimbledon semifinalist Taylor Fritz (No. 4) are his respective quarter- and semifinal opponents.

No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz anchors the opposite half of the draw. The reigning Roland Garros champion lost his Wimbledon crown to Sinner in a tough four-set final last month, and the Spaniard arrives to Cincinnati in search of his first title in Queen City. Alcaraz finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic in a classic final back in 2023.

Alcaraz will face either Mattia Bellucci or Damir Dzumhur in his opening round, with a projected road to the final including No. 26 seed Tallon Griekspoor, No. 16 seed Jakub Mensik, No. 6 seed Alex de Minaur and No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev.

American Ben Shelton is also in the bottom half of the men’s draw, seeded fifth. Shelton made his ATP breakthrough at the Cincinnati Open back in 2022, shocking then-fifth seed Casper Ruud en route to the third round. Shelton will face either Camilo Ugo Carabelli or Kei Nishikori in the opening round.

The women’s draw sees Sabalenka kick off her title defense against either 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova or Jaqueline Cristian, with a possible Wimbledon rematch against No. 30 seed Emma Raducanu looming in the third round. She could face No. 6 seed Madison Keys in a rematch of the Australian Open final and No. 3 seed Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. Sabalenka defeated Swiatek in the semifinals of Cincinnati in 2024.

No. 2 seed Coco Gauff will look to kickstart her US Open swing in Cincinnati after suffering a fourth-round defeat at the Omnium Banque Nationale to Victoria Mboko last week in Montreal. The American has struggled with her rhythm since shocking Sabalenka to capture her second major title at Roland Garros in June. Gauff will open against either Wang Xinyu or Emilia Arango, but could face Wimbledon conqueror Dayana Yastremska (seeded No. 32) in the third round.

Former world No. 1 Venus Williams will also feature in the tournament as a wild card. The 45-year-old shocked the tennis world when she returned to action following a 16-month lay-off at the Mubadala Citi DC Open last month, winning a match against fellow American Peyton Stearns. Williams will play Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the first round this week.

Montréal semifinalists Victoria Mboko and Naomi Osaka could get performance byes should they reach the Omnium Banque Nationale finals. Osaka has enjoyed a resurgent run in Canada this week, defeating three seeds to reach her first WTA 1000 semifinal since 2022. If either lose their semifinal, they will face a qualifier/lucky loser.
