YESTERDAY (July 7)
San Diego Aviators d. Austin Aces, 23-11
Two Mylan WTT teams made their debut on Monday night, and it was the home team that came out victorious. The San Diego Aviators picked up wins in four of the five sets on the night to beat the Austin Aces, 23-11. Rookie Somdev Devvarman, selected No. 1 overall by the Aviators in this year's Mylan WTT Roster Player Draft, defeated Andy Roddick 5-2 to open the night's proceedings in men's singles and set the tone for the home team. After Vera Zvonareva beat Daniela Hantuchova 5-3 to pull the visitors closer, the Aviators picked up wins in all three doubles matches to secure the win. Devvarman went 2-0 on the night, as he and Raven Klassen teamed up for a 5-0 win over Roddick and Treat Huey to close out the match.
Washington Kastles d. Boston Lobsters, 24-16 (OT)
Slowed by two rain delays and a late comeback from the home team, the Washington Kastles opened their King Trophy defense with an Overtime victory over the Boston Lobsters. The defending champions swept the first four events against their conference foes, with the closest match coming in men's doubles at the start of the match. Leander Paes and Bobby Reynolds fought from behind to see off Eric Butorac and Rik de Voest in a tiebreaker, 5-4. Although Megan Moulton-Levy and Butorac won the mixed doubles 5-3 over Jarmila Gajdosova and Paes to put Boston in Overtime for the second night in a row, the Kastles pairing managed to secure the one game needed to clinch the win.
Texas Wild d. Springfield Lasers 17-16 (Supertiebreaker 7-5)
The Texas Wild simultaneously moved to 2-0 and handed the Springfield Lasers their second straight loss in a Supertiebreaker. Texas opened up a 10-4 lead early in the match courtesy of identical 5-2 wins in men's and women's doubles, but were pegged back to 10-9, as Olga Govortsova and Ross Hutchins blanked Anabel Medina Garrigues and Aisam Qureshi in mixed doubles, 5-0. After Medina Garrigues defeated Govortsova in the penultimate event, Michael Russell beat Alex Bogomolov, Jr. 5-1 to knot the score at 16-16 and force the Supertiebreaker. However, it was Bogomolov who then rallied from a mini-break down to secure the win for the Wild.
