Alex de Minaur pulled off an incredible comeback to win the Mubadala Citi DC Open on Sunday night, saving three match points to deny Alejandro Davidovich Fokina a first career ATP singles title 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(3)..

After losing the last three games of the first set, de Minaur found himself down 4-1 and 5-2 in the final set. But he broke Davidovich Fokina from 30-0 when he served for the match at 5-3, and erased the Spaniard's three chances to win in the next game. According to the ATP, de Minaur was 16 millimeters from losing on the third match point, but he chucked up a desperate lob that clipped the sideline to help turn both the point and match around.

"It's something about this court. I did it in 2018 against Rublev and honestly, I just kind of knew I could do it," said de Minaur, who, at 19, saved four match points against Andrey Rublev that year but lost his first tour-level final to Alexander Zverev.

"I just backed myself and I told myself to commit no matter what and if I lost this match it was going to be on my terms," he continued. "Today it went my way. I've had a couple of brutal ones not go my way, so I'm glad this one went my way."

For the second time this season, Davidovich Fokina lost a final from match point(s) up. In February, he had two match points in the third set against Miomir Kecmanovic in Delray Beach, only to lose the final frame 7-5. The 26-year-old is now 0-4 in ATP finals.

Afterwards, de Minaur sat with Davidovich Fokina and consoled him both away from and in front of the microphone.

"Alejandro, as I told you and your team, you’re way too good to not have one of these," de Minaur said to start his winner's speech. "It’s coming for sure. You deserved it today. I just got lucky. You are a hell of a competitor and player. No one on the tour wants to play you. This is not the end. It’s only going up for you.”

De Minaur will return to the Top 10 in the ATP rankings on Monday at No. 8.
