Alexander Zverev has withdrawn from the US Open, but says he's almost fit for a return to tour.

The 25-year-old German hasn't played since injuring his ankle during his French Open semifinal against Rafael Nadal, tearing three ligaments and having to walk off on crutches.

But the world No. 2 said he's "a week or two" from launching a comeback.

''I'm super happy where I am right now," Zverev said on social media. "It was a tough decision... The way the recovery is going, I don't want to take the risk right now and play a best-of-five match as my first match back."

A finalist at the 2020 US Open, where he was up two sets before losing to Dominic Thiem, Zverev will be following his fellow competitors at Flushing Meadows.

"I will of course be watching the tournament," he said.

But Zverev confirmed his return date is still on.

"Unfortunately I didn't have another week or two to be 100 percent fit," he added, saying he is scheduled to play Davis Cup in three weeks in Hamburg, Germany.

Germany starts against France in the group competition.
