Alexander Zverev vs. Ben Shelton: Match Preview
In the first match-up between Top 10 players in the men's draw in Cincinnati, the No. 3-ranked Zverev will try to snap the No. 6-ranked Shelton's nine-match winning streak, a run that has taken him to his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto last week and now to another Masters 1000 quarterfinal in Cincinnati.
It's actually the first time Shelton has reached the quarterfinals at back-to-back Masters 1000s.
But Zverev has been a rough customer for Shelton in the past, the German winning all three of their previous meetings. Their first meeting, which was in the same round of Cincinnati a year ago, was a close one, as he emerged with a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory. But they've played twice more since then, both times this year, and he won them both in straight sets, a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the final of the clay-court event in Munich and a 7-6 (8), 7-6 (1) victory in the semifinals of the grass-court event in Stuttgart.
Shelton has never beaten a Top 3 player, either, his best career wins both coming against No. 4s, beating then-No. 4 Jannik Sinner in Shanghai in 2023 and No. 4-ranked Taylor Fritz just last week in Canada.
Will the surging American get his best career win and his first win over Zverev on Friday night?
