MELBOURNE, Australia—Andre Agassi visited the Tennis Channel Live Desk to ring in the first day of play at the 2026 Australian Open.

The former world No. 1 made a welcome return to Rod Laver Arena on Saturday to participate in the tournament’s inaugural Opening Ceremony alongside the likes of Roger Federer, Lleyton Hewitt, Ashleigh Barty, and Pat Rafter, and spoke warmly of the fan reception.

“These are sport-loving fans,” opined Agassi. “They are honest brokers of the integrity of battle, and I always felt like it was about the tennis [here], so I was able to get out of my own way many times.”

Author of Open, a famed sports memoir, Agassi, who has become more of a fixture in the tennis world since his 2006 retirement, teased an Apple TV docuseries that has been in the works for over a year.

“I’ve been at this for a couple years now,” Agassi confirmed. “Getting back into the game had a lot to do with what makes me tick. When I wrote my autobiography, it was about connecting. It was not just about people learning more about me, but also learning about themselves. I realized that this generation doesn’t quite read like other generations used to, and that starts with my own kids.

“My son is just now reading my book. So, to put myself in a position to communicate my story through a different medium in the hopes of that impact. It’s going to be very real, authentic, and hopefully make a difference.”

Agassi has already made a difference as part of the Laver Cup, leading Team World to an impressive victory over a dominant Team Europe last fall.

“It was one of the great experiences of my tennis career,” Agassi said. “I don’t say that half-heartedly! The Laver Cup was an opportunity for my inner monologue to come out, and it was such an honest, authentic engagement with the game in such a different way for me. I wasn’t having to govern myself. I was part of a team and bringing out the best from themselves.”

Agassi was also able to bring out the best in himself on court Saturday night, despite not using his own equipment.

“My bag didn’t show,” explained Agassi, who had to borrow a racquet from John McEnroe. “It’s a terrible racquet! But I got through it.”
