Andreescu has "small shoulder tear" but should play on clay

Bianca Andreescu has a "small tear in her shoulder" and is still not back on court, according to her coach.

Speaking to Radio Canada), Sylvain Bruneau said she had not been hitting since her third-round defeat at Miami. "At the moment she's been doing a lot of physical training," he noted, adding that Andreescu will consult doctors next week before further decisions.

The 18-year-old Canadian vaulted into the spotlight by winning Indian Wells, having already reached the final of Auckland as a qualifier this season. She withdrew from this week's Fed Cup tie with her injury.

While she still has little WTA experience on clay, Andreescu said at Miami that her game is suited to the conditions and she enjoys playing on the surface. Her coach agrees.

"I hope she can resume training soon," he said. "Obviously, Madrid and Rome are approaching. And she can be very successful during the clay season."

The teenager, who played Australian Open qualifying, will be among the seeds at the French Open.
