Andy Murray could return to singles in less than three weeks, revealing that he is considering playing Cincinnati.

The former No. 1 is playing doubles this week in Washington, D.C., the fourth doubles event of his comeback from hip surgery. Having said he would like to play "singles again soon," Murray was a bit more specific before his doubles opener with older brother Jamie.

"Best-case scenario probably would be Cincinnati," he was quoted as saying in Washington.

But Murray added that if he does not play Cincinnati, he is unlikely to start his comeback at the US Open, where he would have to play the more demanding best-of-five set contests.

Either way, he intends to keep playing doubles and training for singles during the hard-court season, noting that he is happy with his hip and his game but needs to improve his general fitness.

"In terms of how I'm moving and feeling and pulling up the next day from these practices, I'm really happy with where I'm at," Murray said. "But it's just to get to maybe where I want to get to, I'll need to play matches and get a little bit more work done."

Murray will play doubles with Feliciano Lopez in Montreal and, if he does not play singles, in Cincinnati.
