Andy Murray has had a subpar start to the season, but he’s enjoying his status at the No. 1 player in the world—and his job as a father.

Murray finished 2016 on a four-tournament winning streak to capture the No. 1 ranking, but has won just one event this season and been sidelined with illness and injury.

Despite his issues, the 29-year-old Scot is still in very good spirits.

"I'm very happy," he told *MARCA* in an interview published In Spanish. “If it was something that happened when I was younger or had less experience, I would have felt a lot of pressure. But I've been on the circuit for 12 years. I’ve got a family ... I'm not that concerned about being No. 1 or having to win all the tournaments.''

Murray added that he sees being No. 1 as a positive.

“I’m very happy to be there,” he said, “and will try to stay there as long as possible. This year has not been as good as I would like, but I know if I want to stay there I have to improve."

His winning run in 2016, which included a second title at Wimbledon, was accompanied by the birth of his daughter, Sophia, who is now a year and three months old. Murray has frequently suggested that becoming a father has changed his approach to his career.

"Basically, it changes your perspective, in a good way," he said, noting that when he was younger he would often be angry about defeats for days. "Now, I don't have time to [do that] because my family is more important, and I am more interested in my daughter than being worried about tennis every moment. Fatherhood has given me stability."

He and his wife, Kim, plan to become parents again.

"Yes, we intend on having more kids," he said. "The first experience has been fabulous, and we hope to have more."

Murray won his first match against Marius Copil, a wild card, to reach the third round in Madrid.
