SHANGHAI, China (AP) Andy Roddick has advanced to the second round at the Shanghai Masters after Philipp Kohlschreiber retired in the second set of their match because of an illness.
Kohlschreiber quit while trailing 6-3, 2-1 on Tuesday after he missed an easy overhead shot, shanked a forehand wide and double-faulted to drop his serve.
The 10th-seeded Roddick said: ``I hit the ball well in what we did play today.''
The American will face Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round.
