Aryna Sabalenka has blasted her way back into the semifinals of the Australian Open, powering past Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night, 6-2, 6-3.

Sabalenka is now a perfect 8-0 in her career in Grand Slam quarterfinals—and an even more perfect 16-0 in sets in those matches—and she’s now reached the semifinals or better at the last six majors in a row, a streak that began at the 2022 US Open.

SABALENKA AT GRAND SLAMS SINCE 2022 US OPEN:

  • SFs of 2022 US Open (l. Swiatek)
  • Won 2023 Australian Open
  • SFs of 2023 Roland Garros (l. Muchova)
  • SFs of 2023 Wimbledon (l. Jabeur)
  • R-Up at 2023 US Open (l. Gauff)
  • SFs of 2024 Australian Open (playing Gauff on Thursday)

And it’s a rare kind of streak, too: Sabalenka is the first woman to reach the semifinals or better at six Grand Slams in a row since Serena Williams reached the semifinals or better at 10 Grand Slams in a row between the 2014 US Open and the 2017 Australian Open.

Sabalenka has now won her last 12 matches in a row at the Australian Open, and 24 of her last 25 sets.

Despite the somewhat uncomplicated-looking scoreline, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Sabalenka on Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday night, as she did drop serve once in each set. But she was already up by a double break both times and broke Krejcikova six times in the match, eventually moving past the 2021 Roland Garros champion and former No. 2 after an hour and 11 minutes on court.

This will be her six straight major semifinal, but eighth overall—before the aforementioned streak, she also reached back-to-back semifinals in 2021 at Wimbledon, falling to Karolina Pliskova there, and at the US Open, falling to Leylah Fernandez.

Awaiting the world No. 2 in the semis in Melbourne this year will be world No. 4 Coco Gauff, who defeated unseeded Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk after three hours and eight minutes, 7-6 (8), 6-7 (3), 6-2.

Gauff leads the head-to-head with Sabalenka, 4-2, and won their only major meeting in the US Open final last year, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
