At Davis Cup, Djokovic looks to forget ATP Finals disappointment

Novak Djokovic, who won two Grand Slams in 2019, says he had a successful season—apart from his most recent match.

Djokovic was unhappy with his play during a straight-set defeat to Roger Federer at the ATP Finals, which prevented him from returning to No. 1 in the rankings.

"I'm not happy with the way I finished the season. I mean, obviously this is not the way I want to play on the court," he told press, adding, "I think it was still a very good season, winning two Slams, and five titles. "

The Serb defeated Rafael Nadal to win the Australian Open, and Roger Federer to win Wimbledon. He then rebounded from injury to capture titles at Tokyo and the Paris Masters.

"I started off this tournament amazingly. I felt great. Won Paris. Played really well," he said. "Just probably things kind of shifted in terms of the way I feel on the court."

Djokovic started with a win against Matteo Berrettini at the ATP Finals and fell in a high-quality encounter against Dominic Thiem during round -robin competition.

But despite an apparent elbow problem in London, he could finish on a more positive note since he is also scheduled for Davis Cup this week.

"You know, right now things physically are fine," he said. "Of course the gas tank is not as full as beginning of the season, but I am motivated to join the guys and play there, because I have not played in the team competition of Davis Cup for some time."

Djokovic will lead the Serbian team in Madrid.
