At Wimbledon, Nadal dismantles Sousa with loss of just six games

Rafael Nadal continued his march through the Wimbledon draw with a dismissive 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 win over Joao Sousa on Monday. The win puts the world No. 2 into the quarterfinals for the sixth time.

Nadal and Sousa had played twice before with Nadal winning both times—though both meetings were on clay, the Spaniard's unquestioned surface of choice. Their first encounter in 2014 went 6-1, 6-0 in favor of Nadal, and the story went much the same way on Monday.

The world No. 69 didn’t help matters by starting off poorly and slipping behind very quickly by two breaks in the first set. It’s a daunting task facing Nadal, and especially more so when you're fighting just to get on the board. Nadal didn't face a single break point in the set.

Sousa has had a few respectable wins this year, including over Top 40 youngsters Denis Shapovalov and Frances Tiafoe. He's also made some big moves at the Grand Slam level, reaching the third round at the Australian Open and the fourth round of the US Open last year. Today's challenge, however, was a major step up, and he fell precipitiously.

Nadal has never lost a quarterfinal match at the All England Club, and he's lost just one set so far this fortnight. He faces the winner of Sam Querrey and Tennys Sandgren.
