BRISBANE, Australia (AP)—Bernard Tomic and Matthew Ebden won their opening singles to give Australia a 2-0 lead over South Korea in a Davis Cup Asia-Oceania qualifier on hard courts at Pat Rafter Arena on Friday.
Tomic was broken in the opening game but beat Cho Min-hyeok 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. Ebden defeated Jeong Suk-young 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
Lleyton Hewitt is not playing for Australia due to a foot injury.
A doubles is scheduled for Saturday, when Australia could clinch the qualifier and advance to a World Group playoff in September.
Australia has won the Davis Cup 28 times, second only to the United States’ 32, but has not played in the eight-team World Group since 2007.
