Hi all. Welcome to the inaugural Crisis Center of 2009, as the first Grand Slam of the year finally gets under way. It starts at 7 p.m. EST, which is 11 a.m. local time, and midnight where I'm sitting here in the UK. Like many other devoted tennis watchers, I plan to catch as much action as possible, so in preparation I caught some sleep during the evening before the start of play. I expect to be in daylight mode by the time the evening session rolls around.

As most of you know, Crisis Centers are designed primarily for the discussion of ongoing matches, including match-calling. The concept is very similar to that of our daily Your Call posts which appear for tournaments outside of the big ones. The key difference is that we expect higher site traffic, especially during Grand Slams, so will need to be more emphatic than usual in asking the TWibe to exclude off-topic conversations until the day's play is over. As posts fill up, we will put up extension Crisis Centers.

Matches of the Day:

Men: I expect that many TWibal eyes will be on the first-round encounter between last year's semifinalist (and former champion) Roger Federer, and Andreas Seppi. The head-to-head stands 3-0 in the former champion's favour, however, and he has already recorded a win against Seppi in 2009, on the plexicushion surface in Doha - so he has to be counted as the clear favourite. For others (Rachael, where are you?) I know that the result of the clash between Simone Bolelli and Kristof Vliegen will be critical, as will that of the face-off between David Nalbandian and Marc Gicquel (waves to Nancy). I also am confident that if Juan José is out there rooting for anyone other than Novak Djokovic, it'll be for Paul-Henri Mathieu against Jarkko Nieminen. Meanwhile wherever our old friend Snoo Foo is, it seems pretty likely that she'll be bemoaning the lack of TV coverage of the Llodra-Malisse match out on Court 21 (oh, the thrill of scoreboard-watching).

Women: The first match of the evening session on Rod Laver Arena could be pretty good - local hope Casey Dellacqua against Daniela Hantuchova, who respectively reached the fourth round and the semifinals in 2008. Elsewhere Jelena Dokic puts in an appearance against Tamira Paszek, Jelena Jankovic's opponent in one of the longest (and most frustrating) matches of last year's Australian Open.

As always, enjoy today's tennis.
