Some of the top names on the WTA tour are on the comeback trail, and adding to their schedules with wild-card entries.

Organizers of the Cincinnati tournament announced that Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka would be among its women's wild cards. Other wild cards are going to another player returning to the tour, Sloane Stephens, and rising young Czech Marketa Vondrousova.

Petra Kvitova has received a wild card into Stanford, giving the tournament five Grand Slam champions in its field, including Sharapova and Azarenka.

Sharapova has also received a wild card into Toronto, along with Canada's Eugenie Bouchard.

The Russian is still ranked below the top 200 as she returns from an anti-doping suspension, having played three clay-court events before experiencing a hamstring injury. She has been playing World TeamTennis this week.

Kvitova returned to tour at the French Open, having not played since her left hand was badly injured in a knife attack at her home in the Czech Republic. She won her second event back, at Birmingham.

Azarenka is playing again following the birth of her son, Leo, and has been back on tour since the grass-court season.
