Bianca Andreescu's "confidence is skyrocketing" after US Open victory

Bianca Andreescu wants to keep the "momentum going" following her first Grand Slam victory at the US Open.

The 19-year-old Canadian has now won titles at Indian Wells, Toronto, and the US Open, and—not counting retirements or withdrawals—has not been defeated on tour in more than six months.

"My confidence is skyrocketing right now," she told a small group of journalists following her victory at Flushing Meadows. "I just don’t want to take anything for granted because there’s going to be weeks where you’re going to lose."

She defeated Serena Williams in straight sets to seal her position as the WTA's newest breakthrough, giving her win extra significance.

"Playing a final against Serena, and winning it, is just crazy," she said. "I didn't have easy matches the whole week. The extra day [off between matches] helped," she said.

The win at Indian Wells, Andreescu said, took a "couple of weeks to sink in." And winning her home tournament at Toronto, straight off a long injury layoff, took "a couple of days." She joked that she hoped it would take just a day to get used to her victory at the US Open.

Andreescu still called it a bigger surprise than her first title at Indian Wells, saying, "I was more shocked at winning that. At the same time, this is a Grand Slam."

Now she's looking for more wins, and knows the way she wants to do it.

"Just play my game," Andreescu said, referring to the arsenal of power, spin, and touch she uses on court. "When I play my game, I think nobody really likes it, because I play a lot different than other players on tour."

The teenager is now No. 5 in the rankings.
