Carlos Alcaraz pulls out of Spain's Davis Cup 2R qualifier following hard-court title sweep

Fresh off a hard-court title sweep in Cincinnati and New York, Carlos Alcaraz will not appear in this weekend’s Davis Cup second-round qualifier for Spain.

Alcaraz, who defeated rival Jannik Sinner in Sunday’s US Open final for his second major of the year and sixth overall, withdrew from his nation’s tie with Denmark in Marbella due to fatigue.

The 22-year-old won the Cincinnati Open after Sinner retired from their final down 5-0 due to illness, then played on Arthur Ashe Stadium the following day in his mixed doubles debut with Emma Raducanu. Alcaraz went on to capture his second title at Flushing Meadows, dropping a single set en route to reclaiming the No. 1 ranking from Sinner.

When Alcaraz celebrated his maiden Grand Slam triumph three years ago in Queens, he made the quick turnaround to Valencia by contributing a win towards Spain’s Davis Cup Finals qualification.

The six-time champions will also be without Spanish No. 2 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for the September 13-14 tie. The host squad fields Jaume Munar, Pedro Martinez, Roberto Carballes Baena, Pablo Carreno Busta and Marcel Granollers, who won the US Open doubles crown with Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos. Denmark is led by world No. 11 Holger Rune. The winning team advances to November's Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna, where Italy seeks a third consecutive crown.

Alcaraz is next scheduled to step on court in San Francisco for the Laver Cup, held September 19-21 at the Chase Center. At the men’s team event in Berlin last year, he contributed eight of Team Europe’s 13 points that culminated with clinching a winner-take-all singles match over Taylor Fritz.
