Ruud Madrid Fam thumb

When Casper Ruud won the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open, it was a full-circle moment for the Norwegian.

While it marked a long-awaited ATP Masters 1000 title, Ruud’s victory ultimately brought him back 16 years to his first Caja Mágica visit. That experience was made possible by a very special 10th birthday gift from his grandmother Liv, as Ruud would share following his final-round win over Jack Draper last May.

“I said I wanted to watch tennis, and Madrid was a good option. I have relatives who lived in Madrid, so we stayed with them and came for two days to watch the tennis,” he recalled.

“I remember I got Novak’s autograph, and I watched Rafa, Roger and Soderling. I also saw Tommy Haas practicing. I loved every minute watching the players play, with my grandmother. She has a photo of me and you can see the excitement on my face. It’s incredible, it’s a dream come true to have this trophy here.”

The 27-year-old kicked off his title defense Saturday with a 6-0, 6-1 demolition of Jaume Munar. Two guests of honor were among those in attendance to witness a sublime performance that saw Ruud advance after 66 minutes.

Keeping with her traditions, grandma Liv was back in the Spanish capital to accompany her grandson Oscar. The aspiring tennis player who dreams of a life on tour fittingly followed in cousin Casper’s footsteps in selecting the tournament for his 10th birthday adventure.

Perhaps one day Oscar will find himself training alongside one of these stars.

Perhaps one day Oscar will find himself training alongside one of these stars.

Much like Ruud did as a kid, Oscar will take plenty of memories back home. Among his encounters included meeting 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, Argentine No. 1 Francisco Cerundolo and Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Canadian is ranked No. 5, right behind Djokovic.

Ruud takes on No. 20 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the third round Monday. The two are tied 3-3 in their series, splitting a pair of five-set battles on clay at Roland Garros in 2021 and 2024.
