From teen phenoms to veteran grinders, every professional tennis player takes a different road in their journey to the top of the game.

But somewhere along the way, there’s always a stop on the ATP Challenger Tour—an essential stepping stone for young players, a proving ground for rising talent and a comeback trail for established veterans, all in one.

Before the glamour, the big titles and even bigger paychecks, players like Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur, Frances Tiafoe and others were earning their stripes in the Challenger circuit, battling for crucial ranking points as they took their first steps toward the ATP Tour.

Over the past few months, we caught up with some of the most celebrated Champions in men's tennis—and spoke to them about their very first triumph as a Challenger.

📍 First ATP Challenger Tour title: Granby, Canada (August 2016)

  • Lost five Challenger finals in the U.S., including three in a row in 2016, before clinching his maiden win in Canada
  • Defeated Marcelo Arevalo 6-1, 6-1 in the final to claim his first Challenger title at 18 years old
  • His second title came a month later in Stockton, which saw him crack the ATP’s Top 100 rankings for the first time

📍 First ATP Challenger Tour title: Oeiras, Portugal (January 2023)

  • Dropped only one set en route to his first Challenger title, and defeated Joris de Loore in the final, 6-1, 7-6 (4)
  • The result saw him crack the ATP’s Top 200 rankings for the first time
  • Won a second title in 2024 at the Bordeaux Challenger, and went on to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time—his best Grand Slam result to date

📍 First ATP Challenger Tour title: Binghampton, NY, U.S.A. (July 2017)

  • Defeated top seed Jordan Thompson in a rollercoaster final, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4
  • That victory allowed Norrie to enter US Open qualifying for the first time, going on to win his first Grand Slam main draw match
  • Lifted two more Challenger trophies (Tiburon and Stockton) during his 2017 breakthrough season

📍 First ATP Challenger Tour title: Sevilla, Spain (September 2016)

  • Won his first and only Challenger title in Sevilla, his ATP Challenger debut
  • Defeated Japan’s Taro Daniel in a 6-3, 6-4 final after qualifying for the main draw
  • The victory earned him a wildcard into his first ATP 250 event (Chengdu), and propelled him onto the ATP Tour

“As a junior, you’re coming on after winning so many matches and feeling great about yourself. Then, all of a sudden, you get onto the Tour and you’re not winning as much. It really hits your confidence, and you have to learn how to deal with those losses,” says De Minaur.

📍 First ATP Challenger Tour title: Nottingham, U.K. (June 2018)

  • Defeated home favorite Daniel Evans in the final, 7-6 (4), 7-5
  • The victory saw him to crack the Top 100 for the first time
  • Went on to reach the third round at Wimbledon for the first time, and faced world No. 1 Rafael Nadal on Centre Court
