Kim Clijsters has drawn former No. 1 Dinara Safina in the first round of the Australian Open, a meeting between the title favorite and the most dangerous floater in the women's draw.
Safina's form has been erractic in her two tournaments this season, with the Russian taking Yanina Wickmayer to three sets in Auckland and then being demolished 6-0, 6-1 by Marion Bartoli in Hobart.
Clijsters could also get another fallen No. 1, Ana Ivanovic, in the fourth round. The Belgian is in the bottom half of the draw with Jelena Jankovic, Sam Stosur Vera Zvonareva.
In the top half, Justine Henin is in top seed Caroline Woznaicki's quarter. Wozniacki begins against Gisela Dulko and could get a thrid-round rematch against Dominka Cibulkova, who defeated her in the first round of Sydney to cut short her Australian Open preparation.
Venus Williams is in the second quarter with Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka.
Home fans will also see Jarmila Groth, the second highest-ranked Aussie after Stosur, take on Yanina Wickmayer in the first round. Svetlana Kuznetsova takes on young American Alison Riske in her first match, while Agnieszka Radwanska, playing her first match after foot surgery, faces Kimiko Date.
