Coming off the high of winning her second Grand Slam title—and first at Roland Garros, Coco Gauff was unable to make the seamless transition to grass.

Wang Xinyu ousted the world No. 2, 5-3, 6-3, on Thursday in the second round of the Berlin Tennis Open.

Debuting her second of three planned custom Miu Miu kits, Gauff struggled to locate her first serve and time her shots from the baseline against an opponent who already had three wins this week—including against now lucky loser Ons Jabeur—after successfully coming through two qualifying rounds.

For Wang, this marked her best career victory by ranking. All three of her Top 10 wins have been against Americans ranked inside the Top 5, having twice defeated Jessica Pegula in 2024 that involved a second-round upset at Wimbledon. The 23-year-old Shenzhen native wiped away an early break deficit in the second set, before serving out the encounter at 15.

During her pre-tournament press conference on Wednesday, Gauff was asked about why she was yet to win a title on grass after a fourth-round showing as a 15-year-old at 2019 Wimbledon produced her breakout tour moment.

“I don't think grass is my best surface, but I'm trying my best to get better each year. I would love to win either here or obviously Wimbledon, but I still have a lot to learn and every grass season I think I learned a little bit more,” she said.

“I would like to say just because the season is short, but also I can't blame it on that because we all have the same amount of time to get ready.”

Wang advances to face eighth seed Paula Badosa. The Spaniard overcame Emma Navarro in straight sets Wednesday.
