Coco Gauff vs. Danielle Collins: Match Preview

These two both hail from Florida, have known and seemingly liked each other for years, and teamed up to bring a United Cup title back to the States this year. But somehow they’ve never played in singles.

Watching Collins win her first-round match made me think she really wanted it to happen. She was even more vocal and intense than usual—which is saying something.

Should Danielle be careful what she wishes for? Gauff will be a solid favorite. She’s 31-10 in 2025, with a Grand Slam title, while Collins, who planned to retire at the end of last season, is 15-11 and has dropped to No. 61.

Collins defeated Viktoriya Tomova, 6-3, 7-5, in her Montreal opener.

That said, Coco lost her last match in disappointing fashion, to Dayana Yastremska in the first round at Wimbledon. Which version of her will we see on Tuesday? The one rolling in confidence after Roland Garros, or the one who struggled with her usual issues, her serve and forehand, at Wimbledon?

I’m guessing it may take Gauff a little time to find her groove and her belief again, in part because she has never played Collins, and in part because she knows she’s a dangerous opponent on a given day, and someone who hits the ball hard enough to rush her on her weaker forehand side.

But I’ll think Coco will eventually make her teammate hit one more ball than she wants to, on a few too many rallies. Winner: Gauff
