Coco Gauff vs. Mirra Andreeva

Is this a “she’s due” moment for Andreeva?

By which I mean, is the 18-year-old due to get her first win over Gauff after three defeats?

Looking at the Russian’s season so far, you would probably say yes. She has been in breakout mode much of the time, winning back to back 1000s in Dubai and Indian Wells, and starting what will likely be a very long residence in the Top 10. If Andreeva can beat Swiatek and Sabalenka, why can’t she beat Gauff, especially on a surface where she has already had success?

If these two had met a month or two months ago, Andreeva likely would have been the favorite, and the winner. But momentum among the top players is always shifting in tennis, and two months can feel like a lifetime as far as their form goes. After a rough stretch to start 2025, Gauff has found her game again, and she did it in part by beating Andreeva at the end of April in Madrid, in straight sets. Meanwhile, Andreeva has come down a little from her stratospheric levels of February and March.

All of which likely makes this a toss-up. It also makes us fall back on their head-to-head, which Gauff leads 3-0. Two of those matches took place in 2023, when Andreeva was even younger, and rawer, than she is now. But Gauff, with her speed and defense, has found a way to frustrate and agitate the teenager. Can Andreeva stay calm, and make that one more ball Gauff forces her to make? Can Gauff keep her ever-erratic serve and forehand in a groove? I’ll say that the current momentum among these two favors Coco. Winner: Gauff
