Before Thursday, one had to go back to the 2021 WTA Finals to find the last time Iga Swiatek suffered an opening loss on tour.

For Magda Linette, she’s now ousted a world No. 3 at the Miami Open in back-to-back years.

In the all-Polish battle, Linette stormed back to end Swiatek’s Sunshine Double with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory. Before breaking her countrywoman to force a third set, Linette twice had to hold from deuce to prevent Swiatek from putting the second-round contest on her racquet.

“I felt than I was playing better than last time,” Linette told Tennis Channel’s Prakash Amritraj, with Swiatek taking their most recent meeting 6-1, 6-1 at the 2023 China Open in Beijing.

“I was just trying to focus to hold my serve first, to get a little more ahead and keep being ahead all the time. Then you might get a chance here or there and eventually I did. That’s what was the most important.”

The 34-year-old previously ousted third-ranked Coco Gauff in the round of 16 at Hard Rock Stadium 12 months ago. All but one of her eight Top 10 wins have come against opponents ranked inside the Top 5.

Swiatek heads to the European clay-court season without advancing past the quarterfinals of the four individual tour events she’s contested thus far in 2026.

After a four-year span without posting consecutive losses, it's now happened to the 24-year-old on three occasions since the 2025 WTA Finals. (she fell to Gauff and Belinda Bencic during the tail end of her nation’s run to January’s United Cup title and was lost her latter two round-robin matches in Riyadh to Elena Rybakina and Amanda Anisimova)

“I think I am a bit confused. There’s no way but forward,” Swiatek said in the mixed zone afterwards. “I’m gonna try to work hard to get back to that. I have it in me, I just lost it for a second, the game.

“Tennis feels complicated in my head. I know it’s supposed to be simple. In terms of my mentality and how I feel on the court, it’s going to take a while.”

The former world No. 1's loss prevents a Miami rematch with Alexandra Eala, who memorably knocked out Swiatek to reach the semifinals of this WTA 1000 last year. Linette is 2-1 against Eala, though the Filipino turned the tables to win their Auckland quarterfinal in straight sets earlier this season.
