Court Report: After World Tennis Day, Indian Wells gets underway

World Tennis Day, the annual celebration of our sport, was capped with a unique twist on tennis at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The 10th edition of tennis on Broadway featured teams from the Americas (Jack Sock, Juan Martin del Potro, Venus Williams and Andy Roddick) and the world (Nick Kyrgios, Kei Nishikori, Garbine Muguruza and Lleyton Hewitt).

Though it’s hard to deny that these lucky participants from the crowd were the real winners of the evening:

Six of the eight participants will make the cross-courty flight to Indian Wells—Hewitt and Roddick, long retired, will watch on TV like the rest of us—where a Grand Slam vibe descends on the desert. There will be a new women’s champion, as 2016 winner Victoria Azarenka has not returned to the tour since the birth of her first child. And although Novak Djokovic is a three-time defending champion at Indian Wells, questions have surrounded the world No. 2 since his cathartic victory at Roland Garros last spring.
