The Miami Open kicked off in earnest on Tuesday, with WTA main-draw play starting in Key Biscayne.

No seeds were in action, but there was no shortage of interesting matches.

American Nicole Gibbs, who reached the third round in Miami a year ago, lost her fifth straight match on Tuesday. The world No. 119 was defeated by German Carina Witthoeft, 6-3, 6-3, in an hour and 19 minutes.

Gibbs wasn’t the only American who suffered an early exit at the Premier tournament. Jennifer Brady had match point against Kirsten Flipkens, but failed to close as the Belgian came from a set down to win, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. There were six breaks in the former Wimbledon semifinalist’s three-set win. She’ll face Ana Konjuh in the second round.

In a matchup of former Top 10 players, Sara Errani bested Belinda Bencic, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Teenager Naomi Osaka also advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Slovakian Kristina Kucova. Osaka will have her work cut out for her in the second round, where world No. 5 Simona Halep awaits.
