Let no one say that the post-Miami, pre-Monte Carlo portion of the tennis calendar isn’t worth the sweat exerted by the players, or the words typed about them by reporters. For this past weekend, one without a tournament at the level of an ATP 500 or WTA Premier, was one of the most dramatic of 2017.

Let’s start in Marrakech, where Borna Coric saved five match points against Philipp Kohlschreiber before winning his first career ATP title. We’ve been waiting for the talented 20-year-old to break through with a result such as this one, but no one could have expected such dramatics in doing so. The two-hour and 38-minute final was the longest on tour this season.

In Houston, at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships, Steve Johnson overcame a battle with cramps—and Thomaz Bellucci in a third-set tiebreaker—to claim his second career ATP winner’s trophy. "A lot goes into cramping,” Johnson explained afterward. "For me today, it was the nerves of trying to close out the title. I haven't been there enough to feel very comfortable."

On the WTA tour, there were highlights from a newcomer and a veteran. In Biel, 17-year-old Marketa Vondrousova reached the main draw by qualifying, and didn’t drop a set once she got there. Her first WTA title came on the same weekend that 36-year-old Francesca Schiavone won the Bogota title. According to the AP, "Schiavone played in WTA events in her native Italy before Vondrousova was born in June 1999."
