BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP)—Australian Open quarterfinalist Petra Kvitova and Lucie Safarova won their opening singles matches to give the Czech Republic a 2-0 lead over Slovakia in the Fed Cup on Saturday.
Safarova beat Daniela Hantuchova 7-5, 6-1 and Kvitova had a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Dominika Cibulkova that puts the Czechs one win away from a third consecutive Fed Cup semifinal.
Reverse singles and doubles are scheduled for Sunday.
The winner of the best-of-five series will face Belgium or the United States in the semifinals in April.
