ROME, Italy—Defending champion Elena Rybakina announced on Friday that she is withdrawing from the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, citing illness.

“I am disappointed to have to withdraw from Rome this year, but unfortunately I do not feel well enough to compete,” Rybakina said in a statement released by the Hologic WTA tour. “I have such good memories from last year and was looking forward to defending my title.

“Rome is so special to me, and I look forward to being back next year to reclaim my title and play in front of the Italian fans.”

The No. 4 seed has been in fine form throughout the clay-court swing, defeating Iga Swiatek en route to winning the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart and pushing Aryna Sabalenak to a third-set tiebreaker in the semifinals of the Mutua Madrid Open. Last spring, she won her first WTA 1000 on clay at the Foro Italico, defeating Anhelina Kalinina in the final.

Known to suffer from allergies in Rome and at Roland Garros, Rybakina indeed appeared under the weather during Monday’s Media Day and struggled to answer questions during her pre-tournament press conference.

Rybakina was scheduled to face Irina-Camelia Begu in her opening round after receiving a first-round bye; she will replaced in the women’s singles draw by lucky loser Océane Dodin.
