Novak Djokovic is set to play his first match since his second-round exit at the Australian Open, but the Serb is the only player in the Top 14 participating in the first round of the Davis Cup.

World No. 1 Andy Murray has been a regular presence for Britain in Davis Cup in recent years, winning the 2015 Davis Cup, but he will not be playing the tie against Canada following his fourth-round exit at the Australian Open. Canada will also not have its top player, No. 4 Milos Raonic, who experienced an injury during the Australian Open. Neither third-ranked Stan Wawrinka nor No. 10 Roger Federer is playing for Switzerland. The countrymen have rarely played the team competition since their 2014 Davis Cup victory.

No. 6  Rafael Nadal, who reached the final of the Australian Open, withdrew from Spain's tie, and 25th-ranked Spaniard David Ferrer—Spain’s second-highest-ranked player—is also not playing. No. 5 Kei Nishikori, who was also injured in Australia, will be sidelined for Japan.

The singles players who headlined the 2016 Davis Cup final are also not in the lineup. Having led Argentina to its first Davis Cup title this past fall, Juan Martin del Potro and Federico Delbonis will not play against Italy, while seventh-ranked Marin Cilic and Ivo Karlovic, who played singles for Croatia in the final, will not play against Spain. Karlovic has retired from Davis Cup, but was convinced to return for the final.

No. 9 Gael Monfils was not chosen for the French team, and No. 14 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is taking it off as he expects the birth of his first child. Tomas Berdych, ranked No. 12, is not playing against Australia.

No. 8 Dominic Thiem is not in action, with Austria having a bye in its Zone 1 group.

The USA will field its top team, with John Isner, Jack Sock, Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey chosen for its tie against Switzerland. Italy has its top three players, while Mischa and Alexander Zverev will be playing for Germany. Australia has No. 15 Nick Kyrgios, but Bernard Tomic is not playing.
