Croatian Ivan Dodig complains about the behavior from fans of Bosnian Damir Dzumhur, after he retired from their second-round Australian Open match. Dodig is an ethnic Croat who was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but the Bosnian-Australian fans in Melbourne were on Dzumhur's side.
“I think this was not a tennis atmosphere,” Dodig told *The New York Times*. “These people came on the wrong site, they should be at a soccer match or somewhere, because probably they know nothing about tennis.”
There are thousands of immigrants from the former Yugoslavia—which Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia were once a part of—who live in Melbourne. Dodig won the first two sets before Dzumhur rallied; Dodig eventually retired trailing 1-4 in the fourth set.
“Really, I’m playing Australian Open, and I feel like I’m playing some Bosnian Open,” Dzumhur added. “I feel like I’m at home, really. This is an amazing thing, the spectators, the fans, they’re just unbelievable.”
