Dominic Thiem tests negative for COVID-19, tops Tsitsipas in UTS

The ripple effects of Grigor Dimitrov's announcement that he tested positive for COVID-19 have been instant. The Adria Tour—which featured Dimitrov in both Belgrade and Zadar—canceled Sunday's final between Novak Djokovic and Andrey Rublev.

Beyond the Balkans, concerns immediately flared for Dominic Thiem, as well as Dimitrov has been in contact with over the last week. Thiem had competed against Dimitrov in Belgrade last weekend on his way to the title before flying to France. The players also took part in off-court events and participated in a press conference together.

At the Mouratoglou Academy in Nice, Thiem tested negative for the virus. He made his UTS debut on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Richard Gasquet, and was scheduled to face Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday night.

He would take the court against the "Greek God" and hand him his first loss of the UTS event by a 3-1 margin. The match was a lot closer than it seems as Thiem won thanks to a deciding point played at 13-all when time ran out.

Had he lost that point, the match would have been decided in "sudden death" style overtime.

Reports indicated that players involved in the Zadar exhibition are being tested. Some of the top-billed players include Rublev, Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Marin Cilic.
