Elena Rybakina served up the second Grand Slam title of her career in Melbourne on Saturday night, adding the Australian Open trophy to the Wimbledon trophy she captured in 2022.

And she had to beat the Top 2 players on the WTA rankings to get there, outdoing No. 2-ranked Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-1, and No. 1-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in the final, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

With that 1-2 sweep, the Kazakh becomes just the fourth woman ever to defeat both of the Top 2 players en route to an Australian Open title, since official WTA rankings began in 1975.

Jennifer Capriati was the first woman to achieve the feat in 2001, defeating world No. 2 Lindsay Davenport in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-4, and world No. 1 Martina Hingis in the final, 6-4, 6-3.

Capriati, incidentally, was on hand in Rod Laver Arena on Saturday night to present Rybakina with the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.

Serena Williams was the second woman to do it in 2005, beating No. 2 Amelie Mauresmo in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-2, before rallying past No. 1 Lindsay Davenport in the final, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.

And Madison Keys became the third woman on the list in 2025, saving match point to beat No. 2 Swiatek in the semifinals, 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (8), before edging No. 1 Sabalenka for the title, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.

Rybakina is the 11th woman to defeat the No. 1 and No. 2 players on the WTA rankings at any Grand Slam since WTA rankings began, and just the second in the last 17 years after Keys a year ago.

WOMEN TO BEAT BOTH NO. 1 AND NO. 2 AT A GRAND SLAM:

  • Tracy Austin (1979 US Open)
  • Hana Mandlikova (1985 US Open)
  • Steffi Graf (1999 Roland Garros)
  • Serena Williams (1999 US Open, 2002 Roland Garros, 2005 Australian Open)
  • Venus Williams (2000 Wimbledon, 2000 US Open, 2005 Wimbledon)
  • Jennifer Capriati (2001 Australian Open)

  • Maria Sharapova (2006 US Open)
  • Svetlana Kuznetsova (2009 Roland Garros)
  • Madison Keys (2025 Australian Open)

Rybakina is projected to move up from No. 5 to No. 3 when the new WTA rankings come out on Monday, right behind the Top 2 stars she defeated en route to the title in Melbourne.
