Emma Navarro, Tommy Paul out of US Open mixed doubles; Jack Draper re-pairs with Jessica Pegula

Three players that were on the initial direct entry list for the upcoming US Open mixed doubles event have dropped out, leading to multiple changes for the two-day competition.

Among them: Emma Navarro, who will instead play the WTA 500 event in Monterrey next week. The 2024 US Open semifinalist was one half of the top-ranked duo alongside four-time major winner Jannik Sinner.

The defending men’s champion at Flushing Meadows has until Sunday at 2 p.m. to find another partner ranked high enough to maintain direct entry, though his participation, too, is up in the air. Sinner will take the court Saturday as a heavy favorite in his Cincinnati Open semifinal with 136th-ranked Terence Atmane. Mixed doubles action in Queens begins Tuesday less than 24 hours after the Cincinnati singles finals are staged.

Paula Badosa had previously pulled out from the hard-court major due to an ongoing back injury, leaving Jack Draper to seek a replacement for a second time with Zheng Qinwen sidelined by elbow surgery. The left-hander has found one in Jessica Pegula, after her countryman Tommy Paul pulled the plug. Draper and Pegula held up as a direct entry by re-pairing with a combined ranking of 9 (as of the July 28 deadline) that kept them among the top-eight entrants.

Jasmine Paolini and Lorenzo Musetti, who just missed out on making the original cut and didn’t receive one of the six announced wild cards, are now in the field as direct entrants.

Two more wild cards still remain on the table in addition to the spot that opened up—and there are several players beyond Sinner who could also be swayed to change their plans. Carlos Alcaraz awaits the winner of Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton in the Cincinnati final four. All three are currently slated to play mixed doubles.

The same goes for Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina, who meet for a Cincinnati final berth on Sunday. Paolini could also join that conversation, as she looks to extend her stay in Ohio with a quarterfinal win against Coco Gauff on Friday evening.
