It’s been quite the week for Emma Raducanu at the Mubadala Citi DC Open, one that has brought the former US Open champion back to a WTA semifinal for the first time in over a year.

Facing a familiar foe on a Friday afternoon that tested her limits, Raducanu wrapped up a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Maria Sakkari. The 22-year-old strung together the final five games to advance after two hours and six minutes in humid conditions that felt like “you have just opened an oven and it just stayed open and your head is in there.”

Emma Raducanu is a win away from reaching her first final since the 2021 US Open

Reflected Raducanu in her press conference, “I would like to say I'm pretty good in the heat, for the most part, but I was really struggling today. And I think also the fact that Maria, she was so fresh, she was out of the chair before the time was out, is just a testament to how fit she is, which was pretty incredible.

“It was one of the toughest matches conditions-wise I have ever played in. Those points in the second set, I was getting a bit wobbly. I'm just happy I could close it out and it was two sets.”

The Brit has now walked off the court at Rock Creek Park with five wins, having also reached the final four in doubles with Elena Rybakina (the two are scheduled to play again Friday evening). Raducanu has enjoyed the experience of teaming up with a fellow Grand Slam champion and says her competitiveness is a key area of growth after assessing what she’s accomplished thus far at the WTA 500.

“I think it is a big benchmark. I think also the quality of opponents I have played in the last three rounds, I have played three great matches to be here in the semifinals, and it is the first semis in a long time,” she said. “So I'm really proud of that and just happy that all the hard work I have been doing is starting to pay off.

“I think I have been a lot more focused and competitive for each point and not being flat or defeated.”

Raducanu is now 4-0 against Sakkari, with three of those wins coming on hard courts. The run here puts the former world No. 10 in strong contention to be seeded at next month’s US Open, as she looks to further improve her case this weekend. Raducanu awaits the winner of fourth seed Clara Tauson and Anna Kalinskaya for a chance to contest her first final since becoming a major title holder.
