The Family Circle Cup was hit by three retirements on Wednesday, led by world No. 12 Marion Bartoli, who called it quits two hours and 34 minutes into her second-round match against Peng Shuai. Bartoli was down 2-6, 7-6 (2), 4-3 when she retired, complaining of dizziness. The Frenchwoman has now retired from 25 WTA tournaments in her career, including 10 in the last two years.

Also on Wednesday, No. 3 seed Victoria Azarenka retired from a match for the second straight week with a hamstring problem. The Belarussian won her opening set against  Christina McHale, 6-2, and then retired at 2-2 in the second set. Japan's Ayumi Morita retired with an injury down 6-4, 2-0 to Daniela Hantuchova. The tournament also lost Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and defending champion Sabine Lisicki before it began.—M.C.
