Roger Federer wins his first clay court match of 2010 in Estoril against Bjorn Phau, 6-3, 6-4. Federer, the defending French Open champion, was upset by Ernests Gulbis in Rome last week.
“We’ll see how tricky it is to defend my titles,” said Federer, who also won Madrid last year. “I know my game, my mind and my body is good enough. The next few weeks will be interesting, not crucial, to see where my level is at.”
Federer will face French veteran Arnaud Clement in the Estoril quarterfinals.—M.C.
